Law School Curriculum
Suggested for studies in Elder Law and/or Special Needs Law


On May 2, 2007, the NAELA Board of Directors approved the following suggested curriculum for studies in ELDER LAW

The following courses constitute the core Elder Law curriculum and are strongly recommended:

  • Any Elder Law specific course, including substantive courses, seminars, clinics and internships
  • Trusts and Estates (survey course)
  • Estate Planning
  • Estate and Gift Tax
  • Bioethics or Death and Dying
  • Wills and Trusts Drafting
  • Interviewing, Counseling, Negotiations
  • Administrative Law
  • Public Benefits or Poverty Law
  • Any writing requirement should be satisfied by writing on an elder law topic

The following courses are also relevant to an Elder Law practice:

  • Trial Advocacy
  • Health Law
  • Housing & the law
  • Family Law
  • Consumer Law
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Disabilities law
  • Pension Law or Employee Benefits
  • Law Practice Management
  • Financial planning course
  • Accounting and the Law
  • Insurance Law

This curriculum assumed a certain number of required law school courses, such as Professional Responsibility, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Property, Torts, Evidence, etc.

On July 17, 2010, the NAELA Board of Directors approved the following suggested curriculum for studies in SPECIAL NEEDS LAW:

The following courses constitute the core Special Needs Law curriculum and are strongly recommended:

  • Administrative Law
  • Elder Law
  • Disability Law
  • Trusts and Estates
  • Estate Planning
  • Federal Taxation of Trusts, Estates and Gifts
  • Wills and Trusts Drafting
  • Government Benefits
  • Family Law
  • Advanced Wills and Trusts

The following courses are also relevant to Special Needs Law practice and are suggested as electives:

  • Education Law
  • Interviewing and Counseling
  • Negotiation and Mediation
  • Health Law
  • Insurance Law
  • Children and the Law
  • Bioethics
  • Micro Boards
