NAELA Opposes Granting Nursing Homes Immunity for COVID-19 Deaths in Letter with Advocates

NAELA joined a letter with other advocates to the Senate Judiciary Committee to strongly oppose granting immunity to nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Committee held a hearing on Tuesday examining the issue of liability during the pandemic. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has called for blanket immunity for businesses related all COVID-19 related harm as a pre-condition to any future stimulus package. According to the letter, “[t]o date, at least 11,000 nursing home residents have died due to COVID-19, although we expect that number is much larger. Stripping residents of their right to hold nursing homes accountable for substandard care will put more residents at risk and inevitably result in increased resident deaths.”
